7 BE students in police net
The city police on Saturday arrested seven engineering college students on various charges ranging from assualt and kidnap to ragging.
Three of those arrested have been accused of kidnapping and assault, while the other four college students have been accused of indulging in ragging.
A few days ago, some students of a popular private engineering college in Gummidipoondi had invited some of their juniors to their room and allegedly ragged them. When the juniors protested, the senior students had allegedly assaulted them.
Not willing to let the senior engineering college students get away scot free, the junior students got some people together and assaulted them.
They looked for one Manoj Kumar but when they could not find him, they kidnapped his brother Bharath Kumar and fled.
When Manoj learnt of the incident, he lodged a complaint with the Thirumangalam police who conducted vehicle checks.
The junior engineering students learnt that the police were on the lookout for them and beat up Bharath before dumping him on the Karan Odai Bridge near Red Hills.
“Fearing that he might die, the gang came back and took him with them,” police said.
“While they were on their way to Anna Nagar in a share autorickshaw to leave him in an apartment, we nabbed them,” said police.
Police arrested Ram Subbu, Rahul and Bharath for kidnapping a student and also booked four senior students Bhavan, Manoj Kumar, Navin and Srinivas Teja, who hail from Andhra Pradesh, on charges of ragging.
All the seven students have been remanded to judicial custody.
A special police team has been formed to nab two more students who aided the kidnap.
