55-year-old dies as TV explodes
A 55-year-old man died when fire and smoke engulfed the room after a TV connected to an inverter-supported power supply reportedly exploded during a power cut at his residence in Kondithopu on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Nagalingam, who was working in private company in Parry’s Corner. Nagalingam was on leave for health reasons and was alone at home when the incident took place as his wife, Usha, was at a temple. The couple had no children.
On returning from the temple, Usha noticed Nagalingam struggling in the smoke-filled room with burn injuries, said police. With the help of neighbours, she broke open the door and took him to Kilpauk medical college where he died at night.
Police personnel who visited the scene of the accident believe that the television set exploded as Nagalingam was watching a programme. “The rear portion of the TV was burnt. Some things kept on the TV stand were also damaged in the fire. The glass window panels were also shattered, while the curtain was also damaged,” said the police personnel.
It is not clear what caused the explosion and the fire. The police are trying to find out if there was something wrong with the power connection.
“As there was no power, the TV was working on inverter. It is possible that there might have been a problem with the TV or with the power connection. The inverter was intact.,” the police said after conducting initial inquiry at the residence of the deceased.
“The mishap could also have been the result of a short circuit,” said police.
