4,000 apply for voter ID cards
The election department has evoked a decent response from aspiring voters in Pudukottai constituency where bypolls are round the corner, as it has received 4,000 applications seeking inclusion of names in electoral rolls, within a few days after the announcement of election schedule.
Also, flying squad officials have seized Rs 25 lakh unaccounted money and kind during surprise checks.
“We have received 4,000 applications from aspiring voters and they are under scrutiny,” chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar told Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday and added that names of eligible applicants would soon be included in the electorate as the applications are under scrutiny.
With the filing of nominations set to commence from Friday, the election commission has intensified its surveillance to prevent flow of money in the constituency.
“As of now, the flying squads, comprising police and revenue officials, besides a videographer, have seized Rs 22 lakh and Rs 3 lakh in kind,” Mr Kumar said.
The seizure would be handed over to the income tax department for further verification.
