40 varsities seek one more chance
With the Prof Tandon committee blacklisting over 40 deemed universities in the country a couple of years ago, administrators of several of these deemed universities have urged the Union human resource development ministry to complete their reviews at the earliest as they are facing a lot of difficulties, including uncertainty about admissions.
One of the administrators of a city-based deemed university blamed the committee’s methodology to
review deemed universities.
“We were given just 15 minutes to deliberate about our university. We don’t know how a committee could decide about a university in just 15 minutes.
A review team from the University Grants Commission (UGC) has appreciated our university’s functioning. So it is not clear as to how the committee jumped to this conclusion,” the administrator said.
Another administrator pointed out that the fate of several students was hanging in balance as the Supreme Court had not delivered its verdict yet in the case.
“Until the MHRD completes its review and the Supreme Court gives us a clean chit, we will not be able to get research funding from central government agencies. So we urge both the apex court and MHRD to take their final decision at the earliest,” the chancellor of a deemed university said.
Students too are worried as they have paid huge amounts as capitation and tuition fees for admission.
“We are anxiously waiting for the final decision, if the court and government comes up with a negative decision lakhs of students will be affected,” said S. Tenhisin, a student from Assam, who is studying Electronics and Communication Engineering in one of the blacklisted universities.
