40 Hindu activists stage demo, held
About 40 Hindu activists who demonstrated against the suspension of chemistry teacher Abirami of SBOA school and junior college, Anna Nagar, here in front of the school on Wednesday morning were arrested and let off by the police in the evening.
Ms Abirami, teaching in the school for over a decade, alleged that she was placed under suspension on March 13 after she sang a Hindu prayer song. “I had been seeking permission to sing a prayer song in front of class 12 students before they board a bus to an examination centre.
But the management did not respond and on March 13, I sang a song on Vinayaka and also mentioned about other two religions. Though vice-principal Jayanthi switched off the mike twice, I continued singing,” said Ms Abirami. “I sought the help of Viswa Hindu Parishad and they protested on Wednesday morning,” she said.
While she alleged that only Christian songs are allowed, principal P.C. Selvarani said it was a secular school. Though they pray for the students before the exams, “on that day, Abirami, all of a sudden barged on to the dais. While our vice-principal asked her to wait, she started screaming unusual things”.
Mr D. Suresh Kumar, SBOA president, said, “The school doesn’t have any religious stand.” He alleged that Ms Abirami was already involved in acts of indiscipline and was now trying to make this out to be a religious issue.
