3 stolen idols identified by priest, 2 staff
The priest and two other employees of a temple in Ariyalur from where international idol smuggler Subash Kapoor had allegedly stolen idols on Monday identified three photographs of the stolen idols, believed to have been obtained through Interpol, according to sources.
The idol wing sleuths had been interrogating Subash Kapoor, 63, and are hopeful of recovering the idols.
Kapoor was caught in Germany after a lookout circular was issued through the Interpol and had been extradited to India on July 13.
“Kapoor will be produced in a court in Jayakondam on Tuesday and we may seek extension of custody as we have not completed the interrogation. This is a very complicated case. So we need to question him more,” a source in the idol wing, which is questioning the smuggler, told Deccan Chronicle.
The police had started recording Kapoor’s statements in front of his lawyers on Sun-
day.
The police believe that Kapoor was behind the theft of at least 18 idols from temples in Ariyalur. The police had already arrested some of his associates, including Sajeevi Asokan and Rathinam, two years ago.
