2-storey parking lot at CMBT soon
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is set to float a tender to finalise a developer for construction of a two storied parking facility at Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Koyambedu (CMBT) as the existing basement parking lot is choked in the wake of increased demand for parking of two wheelers.
“The proposed parking facility will be an extension of the existing parking facility that comprises two basement floors.
The firm, Pithavadian, which had been entrusted with conducting the feasibility study has recently submitted a detailed project report on the new facility,” sources in CMDA told DC and added that tenders would soon be floated for the project.
The proposed parking lot would provide space for 5,500 vehicles, mainly two wheelers, and will have a separate lot for just cars, something the present facility doesn’t have.
The proposal has been mooted as the number of two wheelers arriving at CMBT parking lot has grown manifold, over the years, and is facing a severe space crunch despite being less than two years old, said an official.
“Passenger movement to Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Kanchipuram has been increasing due to industrialisation and hence demand for parking has increased considerably,” he said.
As per the new proposal, a two-storied parking complex will be constructed above the existing basement parking thus providing space for over 5,000 vehicles.
The existing parking lot comprises two basement level floors where 2,000 two-wheelers could be parked and a ground floor where two wheelers and a few cars are allowed to park. The existing parking lot was inaugurated in December 2010.
