107 revenue villages to be formed
In a effort to ensure that the rural areas in the southern district of Kanyakumari were administered effectively, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Wednesday ordered the creation of 107 new revenue villages and also the constitution of equal number of village administrative officer and village assistants posts.
The decision to restructure the revenue villages was taken since the district accounts for a high population density ranging from 30,000 to one lakh in each revenue village.
Further, several areas of the municipalities and panchayats fall under the present 81 villages. People are forced to travel long distances to meet the VAOs concerned for various reasons.
As per the new initiative, revenue villages spread across Agasteeswaram and Thovalai Taluks of Nagercoil revenue division and Kalkulam and Vilavancode taluks of Padmanabhapuram revenue division would be restructured and 107 new revenue villages would be formed, according to an official release here on Wednesday.
At the end of the restructuring exercise, Kanyakumari district will have 188 revenue villages. Accordingly, the posts of VAOs and VAs will be created in all the 107 new revenue villages.
The move will entail the state exchequer a sum of Rs 5.60 crore and a recurring expense of `2.68 crore per annum, the release said.
