1,000 vehicles to join STC fleet
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa will flag off 1000 new buses to significantly augment the fleet strength of the State Transport Corporation and improve the availability of seats for the travelling public.
According to sources, it was initially planned to launch 450 to 600 buses but the number was raised to 1000 as the chief minister was keen that the public transport facilities quickly reach the optimum levels. The new buses are going through final touches at various bus depots in Chennai.
Besides being eco-friendly, the buses will be more comfortable both for the passengers and the crews.
Of the 1,000 buses, the long-distance operator State Express Transport Corporation’ (SETC) will get 370 buses, while Villupuram transport corporation will have 190 and Chennai’s MTC gets 45. The remaining 395 buses will be shared among the other corporations, sources said.
The Jayalalithaa government is keen on improving public transport with a view to provide inexpensive travel for the common man.
After assuming power in May 2011, the STC bought 1167 new buses in three batches (196, 464 and 507), as part of the proposed addition of 3,000 vehicles to its fleet.
This apart, the government had also announced in the previous budget session that 3,000 more buses would be added to the STC.
