The fashion of art

Art curator Sushma Bahl and fashion commentator Vidyun Singh have conceived a show Convergence – Art and Fashion that explores the junction between design and art. The paintings and sculptures produced by artists have been transposed onto fabrics and other accessories while fashion designers have produced works of art. The entire ensemble of works on display and indeed the concept itself emphasises the idea that both in design and art, the thought process remains the same but with

Melancholic memories

Every artist is in search of his or her own particular idiom to express his or her voice, but very few of them find it.

Worth a read!

An artist life exists apart from and way beyond a single catalogue or show. Books based on an artist’s works and rarely those on the life of the artist go far in preserving his or her artistic legacy. The odd epiphanous text may even succeed in demystifying the creative process itself.

Logic in the abstract

Abstraction, both by definition and practice, is non narrative and because of this, it is rather tempting to seek commonalities within the works of different abstract painters. Even in the show Between Ambivalence and Criticism, a show of five artists practising abstract art at Art Konsult gallery, one looks for certain linkages, be it in texture or in colour.

‘ART’ OF MEDITATION

An artist’s journey from abstraction to figurative or vice versa is always fascinating. Narender Pal Singh traverses this ground with his latest series The Sixth Element presented by Gallery Alternatives. A painter from Bihar settled in Delhi for many a year, Singh has been a pungent and indeed an entertaining commentator on the

Sports and the city

A mammoth art exhibition, Art Celebrates 2010-Sports and the City, curated by Rupika Chawla, coincided with the Commonwealth Games. The exhibition covered all the available space of the premiere display art showground, the Lalit Kala Akademi. Though it did not receive the accolades, coverage or footfalls of events such as the opening ceremony, it nevertheless showcased a significant confluence of artists and art trends.

Inspired by beloved Bapu

Besides being the festive season, it seems to be Gandhi season. In the capital itself, there were at least five shows based on Gandhiji within a space of a month, not to speak of a fashion show in Kolkata and the rest of the country. So a show on Gandhi, his actions, reactions and philosophy seems to be ab initio a trite idea. An artist

Colours of hope

The first solo show by Hyderabad-based Sujith SN titled Map is Not the Territory is built on the twin axis of violence and structures. Both the subjects have been explored before by many artists, so the thematic is certainly not novel. The young artist however infuses new life into the subject through minimalist treatment and understatement. His palette is limited with charred siennas, ochres and grey water colours, dry pastel and charcoal dominating the surface of paper, though some of the works do have brighter colours.

To Bapu, with love

Jaipur-based artist Gopal Swami Khetanchi seems to have changed his style with his latest show Gandhi-giri curated by Archana B Sapra. He is known for his romantic reinterpretations of Rajput miniature and mural tradition with the nayika and other series.

Light and darkness

Amongst the various formative elements of a photograph, a key component is the restriction and flow of light falling on a light-sensitive surface. The distinguishing mark of a photographer is how he or she uses light. The choice of subject is vital as are the technical and creative components of composition, framing and the like. What sets
