Techie finds success behind the camera
Hyderabad: Being a man of few words is what worked for Jim George. Setting up a production company was never on his bucket list until his friend planted the start-up seed in him.
“I first worked at a production house in Hyderabad as an office manager. During the time, I began liking editing and hence, started learning it even though it wasn't my work. My boss was humble enough to teach me,“ reveals the founder of Splash Media, a video production firm that was started in 2009.
Having pursued masters in computer applications from IGNOU, Jim bagged a job in Wipro, Bengaluru and worked there for nearly one and a half years.
“In 2005, I joined the production company and worked there till 2009,“ says Jim.
After his stint as an office manager, he became a senior editor at the company, where he was snubbed by one of his clients for delaying a project. “I was upset with myself and that was the turning point. That was when I took editing seriously and mastered it,“ quips the 33 year-old entrepreneur who got married in 2010.
Ask him about initial investment into his firm, he giggles and explains: “All I had with me was my savings of nearly Rs 1 lakh — with which I bought an editing console and started off.” SplashMedia makes corporate films, commercials, audio visuals, documentaries and public service messages.
“For pre-production and production work, we have freelancers who help us complete a project,” he says, adding “for graphics, we outsource the work.” The video production firm has over 30 clients and does about four to five projects per month.
Apart from having Hyderabad-based clients, the company recently got a client from the Netherlands. “We were happy to get a project from a Netherlands-based client,” explains Jim.
On plans to raise any capital, Jim says he is self-sufficient for now.
“However, I look forward to increase my team by adding marketing and graphics guys soon. And, obviously add more clients,” concludes Jim.
