Petrochem producers to consult on anti-dumping duty by India

Gulf petrochemical producers have said they plan to embark on consultations with the governments of the region regarding anti-dumping duties imposed by India on their products, a news report has said.

According to Arab newspaper Asharq Al Awsat, Saudi petrochemical exporters are upset over a decision by the Indian government to impose an anti-dumping duty of more than 22 per cent on polypropylene products on the grounds that their prices in Saudi Arabia were lower than in India, the daily reported.

Saudi Arabia had earlier urged India to lift the anti-dumping tax it has imposed on its polypropylene exports, saying the measure violated World Trade Organisation (WTO) regulations.

Saudi Export Development Centre's (SEDC) executive council chairman Abdul Rahman Al-Zamil expressed anguish over India imposing over 22 per cent tax on Saudi polypropylene.

Describing the measure as "unreasonable", he hoped that India would reconsider the decision in the light of the strategic trade relations between the two countries.
According to Al-Zamil, India imposed anti-dumping taxes on Saudi polypropylene exports, saying it had cheaper feedstock.
