Confusion over pesky calls
Jan. 30: You may have to suffer pesky calls yet again for some more time. The telecom operators are not sure whether the filtering systems, which they have put in place as per the new guidelines on telemarketing calls will work satisfactorily from Monday midnight, said GSM operators association, COAI, director general, Mr Rajan S. Mathew.
This may force the telecom regulator Trai to once again extend the deadline for implementation of new guidelines on pesky calls which was February 1. Earlier these guidelines were to be implemented on January 1 but the deadline was extended by a month on the request of the telecom operators. Earlier also the deadlines for implementation of the mobile number portability was extended half a dozen times as operators were taking time to upgrade their systems.
“We have put the preliminary filtering system in place but the time given to us to put such a system was short. Therefore we didn’t get anytime to test this system. This is a very complex system which involves many operators. So when we go live on Monday we don't know how it will work,” said Mr Mathews, and added that for implementation of the mobile number portability they were given various extensions so that they could test the systems put in place.
“We have got a do call registry, which has not been implemented anywhere,” said Mr Mathew. Trai was forced to review guidelines on unsolicited calls as subscribers were still getting pesky calls from telemarketing firms.
