Centre may release more spectrum
New delhi, Dec. 22: The government may allocate more spectrum to end the war of words that is going on between the telecom players. Telecom minister Mr Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said the government will ensure that more spectrum is available to meet the industry’s demands.
“The real problem is that their is a scarcity of spectrum and we need to increase the amount of spectrum that can be distributed,” said Mr Sibal.
He said that “we need a very broad area within the spectrum available that can be put to civilian use.”
Mr Sibal comments come a day after he met with top telecom industrialists Mr Ratan Tata, Mr Anil Ambani and Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal. Soon after meeting with them, he had said on Tuesday that there was a need to ensure that enough spectrum is available to serve the industry so that everyone is happy.
The minister was silent on the additional spectrum that some operators are holding and the government is aware of it. There has in fact been a demand that it should be taken away from them and distributed to tho-se who do not have it. There is a view that the firms should be made to pay for the extra spectrum.
