ALL eyes top slot in truck category
April 4: Hinduja Group flagship company Ashok LeyLand (ALL) is eyeing overseas growth to scale up to the top 10 slot among global truck makers “We are looking at partners to help our cause to accelerate growth in AL to be among the top 10 global truck major and top five global bus maker. This may be either through joint ventures or acquisitions,” said Mr Vinod Dasari, the new managing director of the company who formally took over the steering of the truck major from April 1.
To become a global name, the company is planning to get active on the export front. “We want to raise export sales to contribute to about 20-25 per cent of sales in next three-to-five years,” Mr Dasari said. The company hopes to explore newer markets in Africa, CIS, Latin America, West Asia and SAARC nations. Currently, the company’s annual exports are just about 1,000 vehicles of a total of 94,000 trucks. This has impelled the company to hike production across its major units.
“In fact, we are hoping to make 35,000 to 45,000 vehicles from our Pant Nagar unit this year which produced just about 2,600 in the last fiscal,” he said. To ramp up sales across the segments, AL also hopes to add new vehicles to its portfolio. “We plan to bring in Avia trucks and Optare buses in India this year. New vehicles from our John Deere partnership will hit the roads in June this year,” the new managing director added.
