We were a little inexperienced: Saif
Agent Vinod has been delayed for quite sometime now.
It has taken us two years to do this project. I am very happy because I feel we have made something special. It’s a big film and there are bound to be rumours. But we don’t have to bother about that. Films take time. We were also a little inexperienced and we thought that we could do this film in a year but things took a little longer than I thought. I am very happy with the final product.
It’s being spoken of as the Indian version of a James Bond thriller.
I would like to state that my director Sriram Raghavan is a very intelligent person because the first thing we talked about was that a lot of people will think that we have done an Indian version of a James Bond. But that would be a very stupid thing to do because, first of all, James Bond is completely English, while in our film, from the first scene you realise that this is an Indian hero who is very different from Bond.
So how is he different from Bond — does he drink and womanise?
I never said that he doesn’t drink and yes, he definitely womanises. But Vinod doesn’t try to be English. I may be an angrez sometimes but Vinod surely doesn’t try.
Do you think the Indian audience is ready for a spy thriller?
India has liked characters such as Gunmaster G9, even Akshay Kumar did a film called Mr Bond. These films generated interest, but we thought it would be interesting to create a character that would be definitely Indian, yet in a contemporary way, and give the film a global platform. There maybe a little bit Bond in his style, there would also be a little bit of Jason Bourne and a bit of Tintin as well.
