South sweeps, prize for Dabangg

The Malayalam film Adamante Makan Abu was named best feature film and its star Salim Kumar shared best actor honours with Tamil star Dhanush in the 58th National Awards, announced on Thursday, which were dominated by South Indian cinema.

Bollywood’s share was claimed by Salman Khan starrer Dabangg, named “wholesome entertainer of the year”. Its producers Arbaaz Khan, Malaika Arora Khan and Dhilin Mehta, along with director Abhinav Kashyap, will receive the Swarn Kamal and a cash prize of `2 lakhs.
In a first, several award categories were shared this year. The best actor category was shared by Dhanush for Tamil film Aadukalam with Salim Kumar for the Malayalam Adamante Makan Abu. The best actress award too was shared by Tamil actress Saranya Ponvannan for Thenmerkku Paruvakkatru and Marathi artiste Mitalee Jagtap Varadkar for Baboo Band Baaja. The best child artiste award was shared four ways — Harsh Mayar (I am Kalam), Shantanu Ranganekar and Machindra Gadkar for their performance in the Marathi film Champions and Vivek Chabukswar (Baboo Band Baaja).
“The jury has requested information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni to treat all those who have shared awards in different categories as individual winners,” said filmmaker J.P. Dutta, who chaired the jury in the feature film category.
Adaminte Makan Abu, directed and produced by Salim Ahamed, won the Swarn Kamal and a cash prize of `2.5 lakhs for best feature for its “simple, yet evocative articulation of humanist values”. The best direction award went to Vetrimaran for Aadukalam. “In all, 161 eligible entries were received in the feature film category, the highest so far at the national awards,” said filmmaker Dutta.
The Nargis Dutt Award for best feature film on national integration went to Bengali film Moner Manush, while he Indira Gandhi award for best debut film of a director went to Baboo Band Baaja.
The best male playback singer award went to Suresh Wadkar (Mee Sindhutai Sapkal — Marathi) and female playback singer award went to Rekha Bharadwaj (Ishqiya). Rishi Kapoor starrer Do Dooni Char was named best film in Hindi, while the best music direction award was shared between Vishal Bharadwaj and Issak Thomas Kottakapally for Ishqiya and Adaminte Makan Abu respectively.
Rajinikanth starrer Enthiran won the best special effects award, while Marathi biopic Mee Sndhutai Sapkal got the special jury award for the “powerful cinematic presentation of an epic journey of a living character” — in this case social worker Sindhutai Sapkal. The Marathi film also won the best adapted screenplay trophy, while that for best original screenplay went to Aadukalam.
In the non-feature film category, Hindi film Germ, directed by Snehal R. Nair, got the top prize, while Pistulya, directed by Nagraj Manjule, was chosen best debut non-feature film. The jury for the non-feature film catergory was headed by A.K. Bir.
Vijaya Mulay’s book From rajahs and yogis to Gandhi and beyond: Images of India was chosen the best book on cinema.
