Rohit plays it safe with Bol Bachchan
Ever since Rohit Shetty’s Bol Bachchan was announced, there has been a lot of speculation around whether it’s an official remake of the Amol Palekar-Utpal Dutt classic, Golmaal. But it turns out that even though the makers of Bol Bachchan have purchased the rights to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s laughathon, they want to put an entirely different spin on the tale, ensuring that there are quite a few surprises in store for modern day viewers. Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan will play the principal characters in the new film.
A source revealed that buying the rights of the original was just a formality that Rohit insisted on, as he didn’t want any controversies later. “Similarly, Rohit also bought the rights of the Telugu film Anukokunda Oka Roju when he wanted to remake it as Sunday. Ditto for Singham, the original Tamil namesake of the Ajay Devgn starrer. With Bol Bachchan as well, he insisted that the entire rights be bought by the producers so no fingers were pointed at him in the future,” our source says.
Now what may have prompted this circumspection on Rohit’s part is the “inspired” label that was pasted against his film Golmaal Returns, which was said to be copied from an old film, Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar. — JT
