Priyanka’s midlife crisis

Some might think that portraying a woman who murders seven of her husbands would be an uphill task, but for Priyanka Chopra, Saat Khoon Maaf offered an entirely different struggle: Portraying a 40-year-old! Priyanka’s character in the film ages from a 21-year-old to a 65-year-old, and she reveals that playing the character when she is in her 40s was by far the most difficult. The reason: She simply couldn’t connect to the age group.
“The 20s is where I am in reality, so it wasn’t at all difficult to portray that bit. Then the 30s are something I can imagine. The 50s and 60s are still an easier age group to portray because as you age your body language changes and that can be depicted,” the actress explains. “But the 40s — the middle period is difficult to enact. You’re not young, but you’re not old either. To get that right was a task.”
And not much help was forthcoming from director Vishal Bhardwaj. “There is a lot of responsibility on you when you work with a director like him. He is the kind of person who gives you the scene and says ‘okay, do it now’. No instructions. After I give my first take, he may tweak it a little bit. So the responsibility as an actor is completely on you, which is scary,” Priyanka says.
The entire process took a toll on her, says Priyanka, adding that Vishal would have to bear much of its brunt. “It was emotionally and physically very draining and I used to throw so many tantrums. We fought, yelled,” recounts Priyanka with a laugh. “But then we also made up.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
