Not the least perturbed

Jimmy Shergill, who was last seen in My Name Is Khan, has a busy year ahead. Having completed shooting for Abhinay Deo’s Crooked, Mumbai Cutting and Soojit Sircar’s Johnny Mastana , the actor is now busy shooting for Aanand Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu.

Besides Bollywood the actor has been also dabbling in Punjabi cinema and has delivered hits like Tera Mera Ki Rishta and Munde UK De. The actor says that henceforth, he would want to stick to doing one Punjabi flick a year. “My last two films were blockbusters. I have been busy throughout the year. I am happy with the Punjabi films I’m doing now. Mail Kara De Rabba is scheduled for a year-end release. We shot that one in 30 days flat,” he says, adding, “I have a large audience there and my films get the biggest openings. They know I’m the boy from the Hindi movies, so they respect me.” The film will be promoted in Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, besides Kanpur and Kolkata, that’s closer home.
Jimmy seems pleased with the response. “When you get positive feedback from the audience, it gives you a sense of belonging. My friends sometimes tease me that I’m so popular there that I can even win an election,” he chuckles.
However this doesn’t mean that he’s moving away from Bollywood. “I will continue to work in Bollywood. I don’t wish to jump the gun and move away from Hindi cinema,” he says.
After a prolonged period of stuggle, Jimmy finally struck gold with Mohabbatein. “True, there was a lull in my career some time back, but I didn’t let that disillusion me. Today things are much different. People appreciated my role in My Name Is Khan. I am happy,” he says.
Speaking of his coming ventures, Jimmy says, “Johnny Mastana is a travelogue. This will be my third film with Amitabh Bachchan, after Mohabbatein and Eklavya.” He’s also working in Aanand Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu, that promises to be an interesting love triangle with lots of drama and light-hearted moments. Abhinay Deo’s Crooked is a Hitchcockian thriller, with an interesting story. The actor doesn’t seem keen to go into details. “All I can say is that it is slated to release at the end of the year,” he says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
