Experimental Deepika on the road less taken

Deepika Padukone is deliberating a lot before choosing her roles. Ever since Chandi Chowk To China where she essayed a double role, the actress has been signing projects with great care. And in her experimental mood, she suddenly seems to be having a thing for de-glam roles.
For instance, in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se she will be seen as a khadi-clad Bengali girl with almost zero makeup. In the upcoming Yash Raj flick Lafangey Parindey she will play the role of a blind girl. Speaking of her new approach Deepika says, “I’m still new to the industry and have a long way to go. I think this is the time to experiment with my roles. I experiment with myself in real life too. One day if I’m in jeans and a simple white tee with a hair band, the next day it has to be a smart pink flowing dress followed by short pants and sports shoes with a ponytail, the day after. So why not do the same in movies?”
Delving further into details of her upcoming ventures, she says, “I have finished shooting for Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, which is based on the Chittagong uprising. I play the role of a Bengali girl named Kolpona Dutta, dressed in typical cotton khadi saris and blouses with three-fourth sleeves. I have always wanted to do a period film and this is a period-thriller. I’m glad I got the opportunity to work with someone like Ashutosh.” The film, which also stars Abhishek Bachchan, is slated for a strategic August release.
The line-up doesn’t seem to end here. “I’ve just completed shooting for Pradeep Sarkar’s Lafangey Parindey. Following that I have another love story titled Break Ke Baad with Imran Khan,” reveals Deepika.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
