Deepika goes all de-glam for Jha
If you’re working with a tough director like Prakash Jha, then be prepared to go de-glam. Practically, every actress who has worked with Jha has gone the plain Jane way. Whether it is Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif or now Deepika Padukone, none of these actresses have had any inhibitions whatsoever in leaving their set image behind and turn into someone far more real and rooted.
“Half a decade ago, it was Bipasha Basu who was seen in sarees in Apaharan (2005). That was when she was her glamorous self in films like No Entry and Barsaat,” comments an industry observer. Katrina Kaif too decided to let go of her Barbie image and played a non-glamorous character in Rajneeti. “She was seen wearing sarees while bearing a kind of persona similar to Sonia Gandhi,” he says. The hype around the leading lady in a simple avatar has resurfaced with Jha’s Aarakshan. The film features Deepika Padukone as the leading lady and she too is expected to opt for a non-glam look.
“Deepika was seen flaunting her curves in Dum Maaro Dum. We guess she did that to show her versatility since the audience would be seeing her in a fully clothed avatar for Aarakshan,” a filmmaker says on condition of anonymity.
However, Jha says that he prefers beauty from within to a dolled up look. He fires back, “I don’t know what do you expect from glamour. It is what is inside you and not outside that matters.” Jha goes on to explain, “If you are good from inside, whatever you wear will make you look beautiful. There is a certain emotion that has to be brought out on screen in my films. I develop an actor’s look based on the character that they are playing rather than their popular image.”
