Capturing their lives and times
It’s biopic season in Bollywood and every filmmaker worth his salt is jumping at the bait. First up is Rakeysh Mehra’s planned project on sprinter Milkha Singh. Popularly called “The Flying Sikh”, Milkha was awarded a Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian athletics. The film, titled Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, has been scripted by Prasoon Joshi.
While the filmmaker and the sporting icon are maintaining a studied silence over the project, the source revealed that the film’s shoot will kick off next year.
The life of Guru Dutt is what has inspired Anurag Kashyap to bring the master’s story to celluloid. Kashyap’s untitled project has a controversial storyline — Dutt’s failed marriage with his wife Geeta Roy, the singer, his alleged affair with Waheeda Rehman and the circumstances surrounding Geeta’s death at the age of 41, allegedly due to excessive drinking. Kashayap is scouting for an actor who can essay the part of Guru Dutt.
Jumping onto the biopic bandwagon is director Anurag Basu, who is toying with the idea of making a film on the legendary Kishore Kumar. Basu has reportedly signed Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra to play the leads and is on the lookout for an additional female lead. The film is expected to go on the floors in 2011.
