Big B is still on top

It comes as no surprise that Amitabh Bachchan features at the top of the list of 100 legendary Bollywood actors, in a poll conducted by the UK- based magazine Eastern Eye. In a first-of-its-kind poll which combined votes, box office, cinematic impact and critical acclaim, Big B stood out even among veteran actors and was followed by Raj Kapoor at the fifth place, Nargis at sixth, followed by Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman and finally Rajesh Khanna at the ninth position.
Though the Khans may be ruling the roost in Bollywood, Big B has walked away with the cake. Other notable stars in the list include Salman Khan at 11, Aamir Khan at 14, Dharmendra at 15, Hema Malini at 18, Madhubala at 24, Kajol at 30, Hrithik Roshan at 32, Rani Mukerji at 38, Kareena Kapoor at 43, Mumtaz at 50, Saif Ali Khan at 59, Priyanka Chopra at 86 and Katrina Kaif falling way behind at number 93.
Amitabh has always had the support of his fans for his achievements despite the low points in his career. He has always said, “It’s the love of the audience for without them I wouldn’t have anything. It’s been 42 years and even at this age, it’s their support that has got me here today.”
The highest placed leading lady in the list was Madhuri Dixit who came in fourth on the poll. She said, “We have a legacy of very talented people. I am proud to be a part of this legacy and I am also proud to be a part of the whole movement where cinema is getting better and we are trying to do something different. It’s wonderful to be highly placed, but it also comes with a great responsibility wherein I have to do something better every time.”
Hopefully, this acts as a catalyst for the young guns in Bollywood to pull up their socks to better their predecessors’ record.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
