Yemeni assaults traffic cop, held

The city police arrested a Yemen national for allegedly assaulting a traffic police constable who was on duty near the Koramangala water tank junction on the Sarjapura Road on Monday. The Yemeni, Mohammed Saleh, a resident of Old Airport Road, is learning English and pursuing a graduate degree at a city college. The police arrested Saleh for attacking Adugodi traffic police constable Gangadhar. The attack is so severe that the constable’s shoulder has been dislocated. He has been advised bed rest for a fortnight, the Koramangala police said.
Gangadhar tried to stop Saleh for riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet at the Water Tank junction. When Saleh tried to speed away, the constable held on to the handle preventing him from escaping. Saleh got angry and tried to wriggle out of the situation saying the helmet rule applied only for Indians. But Gangadhar stood his ground and asked Saleh to produce licence and other vehicle documents. But Saleh had none and was flouting all traffic rules.
The constable slapped a spot fine of `400. Saleh said he did not have cash and would come back later to pay the fine. Since the rule says a vehicle under such circumstances has to be seized till such time the fine is paid, the constable pushed the bike to the corner of the road to be taken to the police station later.
But Saleh, who continued to rant with rage, pulled the constable away from the bike and twisted his left arm, dislocating it. Saleh was arrested and produced before the court, which sent him to custody.
