Villagers protest garbage dumping
Villagers around a garbage landfill in Dodballapur have stopped garbage trucks from dumping waste in the vicinity of their villages. The villagers have been protesting since Saturday.
The incident occurred at the landfill managed by Terra Firma Biotechnologies Limited at Dodballapur. The landfill receives around 800 metric tonnes of waste from the city every day. The city generates 5,000 tonnes of waste everyday. Only last month, another major waste landfill at Mavallipura had been shut after continued protests from the villagers and orders from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The solid waste will keep piling up in the city with the two major landfills shut.
The authorities have been holding talks with the villagers, but without any result. Taking a leaf out of Mavallipura protests, villagers around the Terra Firma landfill have blocked the trucks from dumping garbage in the vicinity of their villages, source said. They feared that they too would become victims of health hazards and suffer like residents of Mavallipura. A week ago, a massive protest was staged by the villagers. But the authorities had convinced them to withdraw it. After the closure of Mavallipura landfill, the BBMP was transporting around 800 tonnes of garbage to Terra Firma every day. The villagers claimed that their farms and ground water had been contaminated due to indiscriminate dumping of waste.
