Syndicate members threw water bottles at me: V-C
The tussle between Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor Dr. N. Prabhudev and Syndicate members hit another low on Monday after the V-C alleged that a few Syndicate members threw water bottles at him and University Registrar (Evaluation) T.R. Subramanya at the Syndicate meeting. But the members denied the allegations and said Dr Prabhudev is misleading the public.
After winding up the Syndicate meeting hurriedly, Dr Prabhudev alleged that the members abused him and the registrar and threw water bottles at them. “They all stood around me threateningly when I refused to take up discussion on a few subjects that were not on the agenda and threw water bottles at us,” he said.
Taking a swipe at Registrar Prof. B.C. Mylarappa, he said that everything was fine till six months ago. “But now, I am facing an atrocity case, and a gentleman has warned me that 10 more such cases will be filed against me soon.” He denied allegations of nepotism while inducting new members into the Syndicate. “I have picked the members based according to their seniority. The appointment of Ramakrishna commission and others too were legal. Syndicate members are creating confusion,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also justified the security cover for the Monday meeting, saying it was possible that the university authorities would have been attacked by vested interests. Another meeting of the Syndicate will be convened on May 17 to discuss various subjects, he said. Sources who attended the meeting told Deccan Chronicle that the ruckus started when Registrar Prof. B.C. Mylarappa, who has declared a war against Mr Prabhudev, opposed Vice-Chancellor’s decisions. “For the first time, Prof Mylarappa opposed the decisions taken by the VC. This provoked the members, who argued at the top of their voice. But there is no truth in Dr Prabhudev’s allegation that members threw water bottles at him,” a Syndicate member said.
All syndicate members have asked the government to intervene immediately as the V-C is not showing any respect to the Syndicate. Senior member Prof. K.V. Acharya said, “In fact, the V-C tried to derail the meeting by not allowing the members to speak on any issue independently.”
