Sullen Shetty quits, Shettar stunned
It’s the first resignation. But will it be the last? The first shock for the Jagadish Shettar government came from Kundapura MLA Haladi Sreenivas Shetty, who ignoring pleas made by senior leaders, resigned from the Assembly on Tuesday. With a group of BJP rebels, led by former minister Karunakar Reddy waiting to spoil Mr Shettar’s first Assembly performance as CM during the session beginning July 19, the CM was involved in frantic talks with the top brass in New Delhi to find an amicable solution.
The distributions of portfolios has hurt egos with loyalists of former CM Sadananda Gowda not satisfied with their ‘insignificant’ portfolios. Fisheries minister Anand Asnotikar and deputy CM K.S. Eshwarappa — who has his eye on the power ministry allotted to Shobha Karandlaje — have demanded better portfolios. Central leaders in discussions with Mr Shettar, are considering three options — make someone from the faction opposed to B.S. Yeddyurappa, BJP state president. Two, make the chief minister visit all Lingayat maths to make an all-out effort to weaken BSY’s stranglehold on the party. The third option, an unlikely one, is to drop the majority of ministers from the cabinet and draft them for party work after the legislature session.
