Striking lawyers ready to defy ban orders
With the lawyers-police-media impasse remaining unresolved, the State intelligence department has learnt that around 10,000 advocates across the state could ‘besiege’ Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday if their demands are not met by the government. However, a detailed action plan for the agitation will be chalked out by the Advocates’ Association, Bangalore, on Monday.
Office-bearers of the Association told Deccan Chronicle that they hope that Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and the others concerned will invite them for talks on Monday. “From the Association’s side, we have sent a letter to the CM informing about laying siege to Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday.
We are optimistic that the government will not test the patience of the advocate fraternity and will instead settle the issue on Monday by fulfilling our demands. In case the government shows no interest on Monday, then the advocate fraternity will ‘besiege’ the Vidhana Soudha without hesitation.
“We are even aware that prohibitory orders, which were imposed on March 3 in and around the City Civil Courts complex after the tussle between us, the police and media, have been extended till March 25. We do not mind violating the prohibitory orders and are ready to get arrested. We might even participate in a ‘jail bharo’ agitation, the office-bearers said.
“Our only contention is that all our demands should be fulfilled by the government. Till then, we will keep away from attending courts. The indefinite hunger strike by the advocates which began since March 3 has also been called off. If needed, we will again sit on the hunger strike based on Monday’s developments. Our main demand is the transfer of DG&IG Shankar Bidari and city police commissioner Jyothiprakash Mirji”, they added.
In the wake of the proposed call by the advocates to ‘besiege’ the Vidhana Soudha and also the legislature session starting from Tuesday, prohibitory orders have been imposed from midnight of March 19 till midnight of March 25. It may be recalled that 65 people, including 52 police personnel, media personnel and advocates, were injured in a clash between on March 2 at the City Civil Courts premises when media persons were covering the appearance of former minister Janardhan Reddy in an illegal mining case.
