Stopped for speeding, Andhra MLA’s men assault cop

Six supporters of an Andhra Pradesh MLA, who were found over-speeding in two SUVs near Chikkajala junction while driving into the city on Saturday morning, have been charged with assaulting a traffic policeman. They were later released on station bail.

All of them, residents of Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh, were on their way to visit the injured Gooty MLA Mr Kotrike Madhusudhan Gupta, who is admitted in a city hospital. The MLA had suffered severe injuries when he accidentally fell from the campaign vehicle of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, during a road show in Anantapur some days back.

Mr Madhusudhan Gupta had suffered injuries on the head, legs and hands and was initially shifted to the Anantapur government hospital and later brought to Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal, in the city where he is undergoing treatment since Thursday. The Andhra CM had visited him in Bengaluru recently.

On Saturday, the supporters of MLA, who were coming in two SUVs, were stopped by traffic policemen at Chikkajala junction at 11.58 am for speeding in excess of the limit of 80 kmph. One SUV was captured by the Interceptor for speeding at 94 kmph and the other at 86 kmph.

According to the traffic sub-inspector, of the eight people traveling in the cars, six of them abused the policemen for stopping only those vehicles with Andhra Pradesh registrations. However, according to the police, though they were told that all vehicles exceeding the speed limit are stopped and booked for the traffic offence, the furious men assaulted traffic constable Shivakumar, attached to Chikkajala traffic police station.

The six men, identified as Ramesh, Ramanjaneyalu, Dhananjaya, Mallesh, Mansoor Ali and Mehboob Pasha, were taken into custody and brought to the police station where a case was registration for various offences. Chikkajala police granted them bail and released them.
