State rages against moral police, 8 held
A day after the shameful attack on birthday party revelers in Mangalore, eight members of Hindu Jagaran Vedike were arrested and cases filed against two television news channel journalists on Sunday. On Saturday night, over 50 members from the Hindu Jagaran Vedike barged into the party at a home-stay in Padil and assaulted four women and two men. The attackers tried to justify their action saying they were trying to “save our culture” and that the revelers were in a “rave party”. But the police found only a few beer bottles and cigarettes. The attackers also snatched the gold chains and wallets from the revelers, the police complaint stated.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalakrishna said the eight attackers — Subhash Padil, Rajesh, Taranath, Ganesh, Sharath, Venugopal, Sandeep Shetty and Taranath — were arrested under various sections of the IPC. Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that two reporters from two regional channels have been booked.
“Thirteen students from three colleges were celebrating a birthday party in the Morning Mist Home Stay on Saturday evening when the group barged in and attacked them. After the assault, they fled the spot. We have found only beer, soft drinks and food from the place and nothing else. We will also verify if the home stay was an approved one,” Mr Gopalakrishna said. One of the attacked girls is the daughter of a Lokayukta police officer, sources in the police department said.
