Shettar stuck in Cabinet muddle
Cabinet formation has become an uphill task for CM designate Jagadish Shettar with former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa pressing for the inclusion of his former political secretary B.J. Puttaswamy and former minister C.C. Patil—who figured in the porn film scandal— and Mr Shettar in no mood to accept this. Governor H.R. Bhardwaj’s reported warning to Mr Shettar not to induct tainted legislators, has further complicated matters with sources saying this could jeopardise the prospects of ministers V. Somanna, C.P. Yogeshwar and Chikmagalur MLA C.T. Ravi not to mention the MLAS linked to the porn scandal. Nor is the CM in a position to drop a few other ministers of the Sadananda Gowda cabinet as this could boomerang.
Sources said that all 20 ministers in the Gowda cabinet are likely to retain their berths. The party also seems to have decided to create two deputy chief minister posts for Mr Ashok and Mr K.S. Eshwarappa to win the confidence of the Vokkaligas and OBCs respectively. Mr Shettar has his reasons for rejecting newly elected MLC, Puttaswamy as he had embarrassed the BJP by filing his papers for the Rajya Sabha election as a rebel without party approval. Sources said Mr Shettar—who is also close to BSY’s rival and party general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar—could be trying to send a signal to Yeddyurappa that cabinet formation is his prerogative.
