Residents protest against garbage unit in Jayanagar
The BBMP is constructing a wet waste segregation unit on the Jayanagar Swimming Pool premises, despite a High Court order directing the palike to segregate waste in open government lands.
The swimming pool is between a park and a residential area, with a school just a few metres away from the proposed site.
Residents, who protested against the segregation unit on Sunday, said it would be a serious health hazard, besides contaminating the pool water.
They said the BBMP has taken a unilateral decision to and not sought permission from any department concerned, before taking up the construction.
BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel visited the spot recently and asked his officials to change the location of the segregation unit, but the officers are going ahead with the construction, the residents said.
Mr. G Rajkumar Shrivastava, president, Residents’ Welfare Association, told Deccan Chronicle: “The BBMP has not followed any rules and is going ahead with the construction of organic waste segregation unit.
It has removed a 25-year-old tree without seeking any permission from the authorities concerned under the Tree Act.
The BBMP has to seek the permission of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and get environmental clearances before proceeding with the construction of the segregation unit,” he said.
Mr. Goel said, “I had seen the premises and asked the zonal commissioner to select another area for the organic segregation unit. But he has taken the call to go ahead with the construction.”
Zonal commissioner Trilok Sharma said, “Every area should have a waste segregation units. Residents of Jayanagar have to cooperate. Regarding We have sought a legal opinion on this piece of land. Once cleared, we will take a call,” he said.
