Rape victim will study in same school

The high court on Wednesday made it very clear that the 13-year-old rape victim, who was allegedly thrown out of her school, shall continue her studies in the same school even if other students quit. “Even if she remains the only student in the school, she will continue her studies there. It is left to the parents of other students if they want to change the school of their wards,” the court observed.

A furious Justice Ram Mohan Reddy made the observation after the government advocate informed the court that ever since the news about the minor girl was telecast on several private news channels, parents of other students studying in the Government Urdu High School at Ramachandrapura, are now trying to get their children admitted to other schools.

The school authorities and headmistress, who were present before the court, submitted that it was based on the request of the mother that they had given the transfer certificate and not forcibly, as alleged by the parents. “May be such things are possible in Afghanistan, but certainly not in India. The girl has already suffered at the hands of a degenerated person and she cannot be further traumatised,” observed Justice Reddy. The judge even warned that if the discrimination continued, he would disband the school monitoring committee. Later, the school authorities and officials of the education department submitted that they have no objection to the girl continuing her studies in the same school.

The girl’s parents had approached the court alleging that the school forcibly gave her a transfer certificate after it was learnt that the girl was a rape victim. According to the parents, the girl was allegedly raped by one Shakeel, who was working as an assistant in their tiles showroom. It was only after she gave birth to a baby that the incident came to light and the accused was arrested.
