Police zero in on killer driver, hopeful of arrest

The killer woman driver, who ran over five construction workers sleeping on the pavement, killing one of them at HRBR Layout on Monday, has been identified and will soon be arrested, said a senior police officer.

According to official sources, police have secured the photograph of the 23-year-old accused Mahi alias Maya alias Kumari alias Manjula and are trying to get her other details. “We have identified her and have even got her photograph. She is 23 years old and unmarried. Her cell number has been tracked to Hassan. A police team has been sent to Hassan," said a top police officer.

Very little is known about Mahi. "She had rented a room in Babusabpalya just two-three days ago and has many aliases. The landlord said that he was introduced to her through another lady, who is a family friend. Mahi was driving the Toyota Fortuner SUV (KA 03 MQ 1369) in an inebriated condition and is not even a skilled driver. We don't know if she has a driving licence," said the officer. The Banaswadi police have tracked down the owner of the vehicle, Raghu Patel, who is a petrol bunk owner.

On the night of the accident he had given the SUV to his relative Ravi, who was attending a party in Kamanahalli. Ravi, a realtor, has told the police that Mahi had insisted on driving the vehicle. ACP (Traffic East) Vekatswamy told Deccan Chronicle, “After the accident on Monday morning, Ravi surrendered before Bansawadi police. During interrogation, he admitted that the vehicle was driven by a woman, to whom he was introduced at the party, and he did not have any further information on her. He was requested by a common friend to drop her back home. While driving back, Mahi took over the wheels and drove over the labourers”.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
