Police go easy, RTO doesn’t
The Road Transport Organisation has shown it means business when it comes to enforcing the rule on tinted car windows. About 250 cases have been booked against drivers who were using cars with the proscribed dark film in the last three days. The cases are mostly booked in Malleswaram, Mahalakshmi Layout and Tumkur Road near Peenya. These cases were booked despite the traffic police, the main implementing agency for the Supreme Court directive prohibiting the tinted film, giving time till May 20 for vehicle owners to strip off the tinted films.
A senior Transport Department official said that the Supreme Court has not given any deadline to implement the law and hence some RTOs in the city have started booking cases. “We are directed to book cases against vehicles using black films under Section 100 of the Motor Vehicles Act. From next week we shall get tough with vehicle owners who possess filmed glasses,” said the official. The traffic police say that for practical reasons they have given time for compliance, but since the RTO is a separate authority having similar powers, the traffic department cannot intervene.
