Need COBRA aid to fight Ultras: CM
Concerned over sporadic incidents of Naxal violence, the Karnataka government on Monday sought the help of the Cobra unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to train its anti-Naxal force in fighting the Maoists.
Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda made the demand while participating in a meeting on internal security organised by the Union government in New Delhi. Responding to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s statement that left wing extremism is dangerous, the CM said: “The grand plan of Left wing organisations is to infiltrate and expand their presence in the states where the Western Ghats is situated—a fact well known to the Central government. As part of this plan, Naxal activity in the five Western Ghat districts of Karnataka is steadily increasing. Unfortunately, we are not getting any kind of central assistance.”
He requested the Union government to strengthen the anti- Naxal wing of the state by providing training, additional funds and by making provisions for state—of—the—art arms. His government, Mr Gowda said, had initiated the process of evolving specific development packages for improving social as well as physical infrastructure in Naxal affected districts. The Centre should reciprocate by providing funds for these development packages, he said.
Along with other non-Congress ruled states, Karnataka too opposed the Centre’s decision to set up the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC). Mr Gowda strongly opposed the idea stating that law and order was a state subject and the proposed NCTC will encroach on the federal structure and the powers of the states.
