The BBMP's promise of solving the garbage crisis has remained a distant dream for the citizens of Bengaluru.

BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel's told Deccan Chronicle on Sunday that Bengaluru would get back its Garden City tag and solid waste management would be streamlined from Monday.

But on the ground, the situation remained the same with mixed and unattended garbage mounds still dotting the city roads.

But Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy said the process will take time and cannot be done in a hurry.
The BBMP authorities said garbage segregation will certainly start from December 1, when the new garbage contractors will take over.

Mr Murthy said, “The new contractors agreed before the high court that they will start garbage segregation from Dec. 1.

Right now, they are demonstrating the process to the BBMP. Once we are completely satisfied, the contractors will begin work in full swing. We have a plan of action and will stick to it.”

He said, “By next Friday, work on at least 25-30 packages will begin. So by next week, segregation will start in almost 70 wards. It will take time, and we cannot expect everything to happen in a day," he said.

But garbage mounds continued to grow in the city, and many residents complained that pourakarmikas were not clearing garbage for the last three days. The city would soon be choked with waste if the BBMP does not take immediate action, they said.

BBMP authorities maintained that garbage is being cleared in most of the areas, but admitted that they were facing problems with garbage disposal because of lack of transportation facilities.

"Many contract workers are on leave and that is the reason garbage was not collected in some areas. But things will fall in place within a week," a senior BBMP official said.

Mr Goel said he will hold a meeting with all zonal joint commissioner on methods to be adopted in segregation of waste.

Asked about his promise of streamlining the process from Monday, Mr Goel said he is yet to hold a meeting with the contractors.
