MLAs, seers force BSY volte-face
Is former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s decision not to break away from the BJP, a tactical move to recoup and fight another day?
Or is he holding his fire so that he can continue to batter his enemies—Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda, party state chief K.S. Eshwarappa and most of all BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar—at will leaving the BJP with no option but to throw him out?
The pressure from his loyalists including MLAs, and the advice given to him by Lingayat pontiffs not to precipitate matters, might have prevented the veteran leader from calling it quits. But there are many in the BJP who wonder how long a rebellious Yeddyurappa would be able to restrain himself, considering his animosity against the trio?
Sources said that after his no holds barred attack on the three leaders, BSY who is planning a state tour to gauge public opinion, will soon come out with all guns blazing against them. "If the party ignores his attacks, people will start wondering how a disciplined outfit like the BJP can allow BSY to get away with it. It’s a Catch 22 situation for the BJP as any disciplinary action against BSY will trigger a sympathy wave for him among the Lingayats in north Karnataka. He can then walk out of the party and form his own political outfit or join hands with the Congress," sources said.
Mr Yeddyurappa, the sources added, is waiting for the BJP to make the first mistake.
