MLA’s car knocks down ex-HMT worker
A 69-year-old retired HMT watch factory employee, who was also a national volleyball player, was killed after he was hit by a Toyota Innova SUV, in which Tumkur Rural MLA B. Suresh Gowda, was traveling. The accident occurred about a kilometre away from the toll plaza on Tumkur Road (NH 4) near Nelamangala on Sunday around 11.45 am.
The deceased, Thimma Hanumaiah, was a resident of Mahaganapathi Nagar in Rajajinagar. He was heading for a function at Bellur Cross along with his family members. He had stopped the car on Tumkur Road and was crossing the road to make a brief appearance at a wedding of his relative at SLR Marriage Hall when the MLA’s SUV knocked him down. Mr Suresh Gowda was heading towards Tumkur from Bengaluru.
Mr Hanumaiah was rushed to Harsha Hospital and was later referred to Columbia Asia Hospital in Yeshwanthapura, but was declared brought dead, said the Nelamangala Town police. Doctors at Harsha said that a CT scan was done on Mr Hanumaiah which revealed a fracture of the left lower limb, dislocation of hip, massive bleeding, scratches on the face and head and a suspected head injury. Doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital said Mr Hanumaiah was brought dead to the hospital around 1.15 pm.
Mr Suresh Gowda told Deccan Chronicle that his driver cannot be blamed for the accident. “My car was going at 80 kmph which is the speed limit on NH4. Hanumaiah after stopping the car hurried towards the marriage hall. My driver tried his best to avoid the accident, but could not control the vehicle. Just 100 metres ahead of the accident spot, there is a pedestrian crossing and 100 metre behind there is a skywalk, where pedestrians are meant to cross. I stopped my SUV and took the victim along with my party workers, Siddagangappa and Kempe Gowda, to Harsha Hospital in another car. From there he was shifted to another hospital. I immediately told the police about the accident. Once everything calms down, I will speak to his family members and will decide on giving them compensation.”
Mr Hanumaiah had taken a voluntary retirement. He is survived by wife and a son and two daughters. Mr Suresh Gowda said he would collect accident statistics on the highway and will write to the National Highways Authority of India to make arrangements to avoid accidents. The Nelamangala Town police seized the MLA’s SUV. In March 2012, Mr Gowda was in trouble after a complaint was registered against him at the same police station. The MLA was accused of using abusive language against City District and Sessions Court Judge A.C. Vidyadhar, and his brother A.C. Dharanendraiah. The judge and his family were returning to the city. At the Navayuga Toll Gate, an Innova car in which Suresh Gowda was traveling was honking repeatedly. When the judge questioned the occupants, Mr Gowda and his companions allegedly hurled abuses at the judge. It was also alleged that others traveling with the MLA tried to assault the Judge even after he identified himself as a judge.
