Love, wedding aur dhoka
An advocate’s wedding at Kodigehalli Gate on Bellary Road witnessed high drama after a woman claiming to be his wife tried to stop the marriage on Sunday. The scheduled wedding, however, went on with the intervention of Kodigehalli police. The advocate had served a legal notice to the woman sensing such a possibility and had also sought police protection.
Advocate K.S. Prabhakar 32, a resident of T. Banawara, was about to get married to Poornima on Sunday morning. A few minutes before the muhurtham, Pushpalatha (26), a resident of T. Dasarahalli, barged into the wedding hall accompanied by workers of a women’s organisation.
Pushpalatha claimed that she knew Prabhakar since their college days and they were in love for the last six years. Pushpalatha was Prabhakar’s junior at Vivekanada Law College in Rajajinagar. She claimed that she got married to Prabhakar four years ago at a temple in Pandavapura in Srirangapatana taluk, but did not have any documents to prove her claim. She had discussed her marriage plans with Prabhakar’s parents, the police said.
Prabhakar, who anticipated trouble, had served a legal notice on Pushpalatha on Friday, claiming he had no relationship with her. She received the notice the next day, but could not take any legal recourse as the courts were closed as it was a second Saturday. She learnt about Prabhakar’s wedding only after receiving the legal notice. Only on Wednesday they had gone to a movie, but Prabhakar did not reveal that his wedding had been fixed for Sunday. Prabhakar had been telling her that he would get married to a girl his parents would approve of, but would also marry her, Pushpalatha told the police. Pushpalatha produced some photos that showed both of them going on trips.
The wedding was stopped for a brief period till the commotion settled and both parties discussed the issue. Later, Prabhakar married Poornima. The police could not take action against Prabhakar as he had sought police protection and served a legal notice on her. “We have asked Pushpalatha to file a complaint if she feels that she has been cheated. That will help us take action against him. But no complaint was registered against him till late Sunday evening,” the Kodigehalli police said.
