Let’s beat BJP at its game: Shamanur
Senior Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa has reportedly urged the AICC general secretary, Rahul Gandhi to replace the KPCC president, Dr G. Parameshwar with a Lingayat leader to bring the party back to power in Karnataka. The wealthy Davangere strongman’s meet with the Gandhi scion is part of a serious exercise conducted by the top echelons of the party since April 16, to gauge the mood in a state that the Congress would like to reclaim after 6 years out of power.
Mr Shivashankarappa, 82, who met Mr Gandhi at the latter’s New Delhi residence reportedly told him that the party’s prospects of coming back to power in Karnataka would improve dramatically if the party was led by a Lingayat leader. He told the Congress leader that Lingayats were upset and let down by their poster boy, B.S. Yeddyurapppa, and that the majority community were waiting for a Lingayat leader to emerge so that they could throw their weight behind him. “If the Congress projects one leader from the same community it will be easy for the party to capture the Lingayat vote bank,” Mr Shivashankarappa, previously the treasurer of the state Congress, said. He also assured Mr Gandhi the Muslim, OBC and SC and ST vote bases were intact.
