Garbage mess: High Court warns BBMP of stern action
Justifying the agitation of Mavallipura villagers against dumping of garbage in their backyard, the high court on Monday hit out at the BBMP for failing to discharge its duties. The division bench of Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B.V. Nagarathna warned the BBMP that it will order for suspension and termination of officials concerned for dereliction of duty.
The bench was hearing a PIL filed by advocate G.R. Mohan, who has sought supercession of palike and alternative steps for proper disposal of garbage. The bench sought to know the current situation. When it was informed that rains have worsened the garbage problem, the Chief Justice slammed the BBMP and asked what the administration was doing about it. “Does it mean that you are not going to take any steps by saying garbage output has gone up? The increase in the output is because you have not taken any steps,” the court said.
When the BBMP submitted that cleaning of garbage was not a problem, but disposing it of was with villagers protesting against dumping, the CJ said that every citizen has the right to live in a clean and healthy atmosphere and the administration should think of alternatives.
