First Sonia, now Andrew, traffic cops do it again?
Did the city police slip up again and put a high-profile visitor to the City at risk by taking him on a wrong and unsanitised route?
Sources told Deccan Chronicle that the convoy of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, who was on a two-day state visit to the city, was made to go up the Indiranagar Flyover while heading towards Electronics City when the route had not been cleared by intelligence agencies.
The incident occurred when Prince Andrew was heading from Hotel Leela Palace on Old Airport Road on his way to the Infosys campus in Electronic City where he met Infy mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy.
Only a fortnight ago, Congress President Sonia Gandhi was taken along a wrong route. A woman police inspector who was in charge of the convoy was suspended for dereliction of duty.
It was also reported that she was busy talking on her mobile phone and missed the crucial turn. In the case of Prince Andrew — also supervised by a woman traffic cop — an Assistant Commissioner of Police told Deccan Chronicle that there was no breach of security as the police had decided on two routes to take the VIP and the route followed was part of the plan.
“In Mrs Gandhi’s incident, we had conducted dummy runs. But in the case of Prince Andrew, we had no such trial runs. There was no breach of security,” he claimed. No, no, not at all. Two incidents in two weeks would make the city terribly unsafe for VVIPs, now wouldn’t it?
