Fear of failure stalls bus priority lane project
A lane discipline project, launched by the Bangalore Traffic Department, has kicked off, but when will BMTC’s bus priority lane project start? If sources in BMTC are to be believed, the project has been delayed because of lack of coordination between various government agencies, including the Bangalore Traffic Police which will help BMTC execute the project.
Talks on Bus Priority Lane have been on for the last several years, but delays by various government agencies have left the BMTC in a lurch. Experts attached to the BMTC have planned the project to streamline the movement of traffic on congested roads in the city.
BMTC Managing Director K.R. Srinivasa said, “We had some issues with it on the ground and the project was delayed. We want to pilot the project shortly, but we need coordinated efforts of the traffic police and the BBMP. The two agencies have some concerns and issues. There was a meeting with the Chief Secretary too to discuss the project. We hope that the traffic department will come out with some solutions which will help in project execution. The BBMP has to do the do markings, erect signboards etc. It is said that the BBMP has already taken an approval from the government to start the marking work.”
The traffic police, who executed the lane discipline project near Queens Road in no time, seem to be apprehensive with the bus lane project. The department is not sure whether the project is good as considerable amount of road space is taken u by these dedicated lanes. Just like the autorickshaw lane, this too would be fail at the ground level, feel many government agencies.
