Elephant scare leaves farmer injured in Bannerghatta park
A farmer who had ventured inside the Bannerghatta National Park along with two other villagers, injured himself while trying to escape after they spotted a herd of elephants.
The trio sighted the elephants in Ragihalli forest area and started running for safety when one of them fell to the ground and injured himself.
The villagers were taken to Jigani government hospital for treatment. It was in the same forest range that techie Satwik Shashtri was trampled by elephants two weeks ago.
According to forest officials, the trio had ventured inside the forest along with their cattle. The elephants were also moving in the same time from the Ragihalli forest. When they came across the herd, farmers ran for safety leaving their cattle in the jungle.
Park officials have been asking people living around the forest not to venture inside the forest. The Ragihalli area has a high population of elephants. Once the harvest season begins (September-October) numbers of elephants increases.
“Large herds of elephants will be moving towards Bannerghatta from Tali Reserve Forest and Kollegal/ Chamarajnagar jungles. The villagers living around Bannerghatta forests must be vigilant, especially during early morning and night hours when elephant movement is even outside the forest area,” said a forest official.
