Drought team happy, says DVS
A team of officials of the Union government, which toured drought-affected areas of Karnataka, has lauded the state government for providing succor in these areas, according to Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda. Speaking to media persons after a meeting with the team here on Wednesday, Mr Sadananda Gowda said the officers were impressed with steps taken by the government to ensure that prices of foodgrains did not spiral following scanty rainfall. They assured the state government that they would submit their assessment of scarcity conditions to the Union government within a week, a move which would facilitate speedy release of Central aid for relief work, he added.
The officers were also satisfied with functioning of the public distribution system, and the fact that anganawadis worked till 4 pm in order to provide food to children. The team, however, pointed out at increasing cases of malnutrition and recommended additional nutritional supplements. The officers also pointed at power shortage in scarcity-affected areas, and advised the state government to put up more solar power plants rather than await supply of addition power from the central grid, Mr Gowda added.
