Drought hit taluks to get Rs 1 crore each
Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on Wednesday directed his cabinet ministers to start reviewing drought related works on a weekly basis but it will be interesting to see if ministers owing allegiance to former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will listen to him with a leadership change looking imminent in Karnataka. Speaking to reporters after assessing the drought situation at his home office, Krishna, Mr Gowda said, "Nearly 80 per cent of our state is reeling under drought and there is a severe water scarcity in more 123 taluks, so, the state government had decided to release Rs 1 crore each to drought hit taluks for relief work."
He said the district in-charge ministers as well as secretaries in charge of districts will have to review the drought situation on a regular basis and weekly reports must reach his office on time. "We are facing an unprecedented water scarcity, so district officials will have to focus on sinking more borewells as well as take up hydrofracturing work on a war footing. This apart, we will soon announce a special package for city municipal and town municipal corporations," he said, adding the government plans to augment its water supply by using private tankers in interior areas which are facing an acute shortage of water. Criticising the Union government, he said, “Though I led an all party delegation to the Centre seeking relief of Rs 5,864 crore, they have released only Rs 282.35 crore.”
