Debates should be meaningful: DVS
The debates in the Assembly are not as meaningful as they used to be – rued Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, while speaking to reporters on the eve of the diamond jubilee celebration of the Karnataka Assembly.
“Karnataka has always been a model democracy. The debates were meaningful and the House always arrived at a consensus in the state’s best interests. For instance, Karnataka received adequate Central aid to tackle drought when S.M. Krishna was CM, as the House functioned in a more positive manner.”
Recalling his 10-year stint in the Assembly as Puttur MLA, Mr Gowda said: “The Legislature has a great history and has seen stalwarts and scholars. But I can tell you only about my experience between 1994 and 2004. I believe that was responsible for my elevation as CM. We were a team of new entrants – Suresh Kumar, V.H. Kageri, S.A. Ramdas, Jagadish Shettar and others. Speaker Ramesh Kumar and later Speaker Venkatappa coaxed us to take part in debates.
They would say that Vidhana Soudha had a resource centre and a library for people to refer to so that debates became more meaningful. . I respect seniors like M.C. Nanaiah, K.H. Ranganath and D.B. Chandre Gowda. Nanje Gowda was exceptionally good as he spoke less but made the difference to any debate.”
