Cops ‘rough up’ bizman, kin

Tilak Nagar Inspector Kalyan Shetty, along with an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) allegedly assaulted a businessman and his parents at their residence on Sunday morning. Around 11 am, Mr Shetty had gone to Mr Rohit’s residence and allegedly manhandled him. He even behaved rudely with Mr Rohit’s parents Mr Shailendra Kumar (65) and Mrs B.M. Jayashree (52), who work for Bangalore University.

However, the whole episode was recorded by Mr Rohit’s sister on her mobile phone. When the inspector and ASI noticed this, they left the premises in a hurry. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mr Rohit’s friend Mr Harsha, a resident of Koramangala who is also a businessman, said: “There is a reason the inspector behaved like that. Two weeks ago, I was booked on charges of kidnap and money-lending by the Tilak Nagar police. A person by name Raviraj Shetty had filed a complaint with the police. I had lent Rs 6 lakh to Raviraj for his daughter’s studies in February and he promised to return the money in three months. When I approached to him for money, he refused to return it.

“One day, when he did not return home at night, his wife filed a kidnap case against me. The police kept me in their custody for eight days and ill-treated me. Mr Rohit, who tried to help me get bail, was also booked accused number two in the case. Somehow, I managed to get bail two weeks back and today, for no reason the Tilak Nagar police entered Mr Rohit’s house and assaulted him and his family. They were very rude to them”, said Mr Harsha. Following the incident, Mr Harsha said he and Mr Rohit will approach the Human Rights Commission and City Police Commissioner seeking action against the police. When Deccan Chronicle contacted inspector Kalyan Shetty, he refused to comment about the incident. The South East DCP, Mr Harsha, too was unavailable for comment.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
